Valley Metro
Valley Metro (officially the Regional Public Transportation Authority or RPTA) is a major public transportation system in the greater Phoenix/Maricopa County region. Unlike most transportation agencies, Valley Metro itself does not operate most of the bus service in the region; Valley Metro and its unifying brand name is considered a membership organization, and all bus service is operated by the city of Phoenix, the city of Tempe, or the RPTA itself.
Shortly after the creation of the brand name "Valley Metro" in 1993, the agency ordered New Flyer D40LF buses in 1994 and 1996, many of which have been retired. From 1998 to 2004, Phoenix, Tempe, and the RPTA have ordered large numbers of NABI 40-LFW LNG-powered buses, and these are currently the most predominant buses in the Valley Metro service region. Valley Metro was also the launch customer for the NABI 45C-LFW "CompoBus" for use on BRT and express services, as well as the NABI 35-LFW. The RPTA also operates ten NABI 60-BRT CNG buses.
Between the years of 1998 and 2002, Valley Metro purchased a number of El Dorado EZ-Rider vehicles used on lower-capacity routes.
Since 2004, Valley Metro has switched to New Flyer for its newer buses. In 2004, the agency purchased a number of New Flyer D60LF articulated buses, and became the launch customer for the New Flyer C40LFR in 2006. The RPTA leased 20 NovaBUS RTS WFD coaches from Golden Gate Transit in 2006 as well.
In 2007, Valley Metro purchased a number of New Flyer 40-foot coaches (D40LF and D40LFR) as well as thirty New Flyer D60LF articulated buses. The agency intends to purchase more C40LFRs in 2008 as well as ten New Flyer D60LFAs.
In addition to its extensive bus service, Valley Metro is constructing a light rail line connecting the cities of Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. The line is known as METRO Light Rail and is scheduled to be completed in December 2008.
