The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System, known as MTS, is the public transportation authority for most of San Diego County in southern California. MTS oversees an extensive bus network as well as the San Diego Trolley light rail system.
MTS's bus network is comprised of San Diego Transit, Chula Vista Transit, and suburban subcontracted operators operating under the MTS name. National City Transit was a former subdivision of the MTS that has now been fully amalgamated into MTS. Since 2005, the MTS has been rebranding all its bus services with an "MTS" identity, although most buses still carry their old respective paint schemes and logos. The majority of the MTS bus fleet consists of New Flyer buses, namely the C40LF, D40LF, C40, D60 and D60LF models. In addition to the New Flyer fleet, MTS operates Gillig Phantoms, El Dorado EZ-Rider IIs, CNG NABI 60-BRTs, and Blue Bird Express 4500s.
The San Diego Trolley, operated by the MTS subsidiary San Diego Trolley, Inc., was North America's first modern light rail system. The original line opening in 1981 connecting downtown San Diego with the Mexican border crossing at San Ysidro, passing through the cities of National City and Chula Vista on the way. Additional extensions were opened in the 1980s and 1990s, and the trolley network has grown to three lines identified by color: the Blue, Orange, and Green lines. The trolley fleet is currently composed of the following light rail vehicles: the Siemens-Düwag U2, the Siemens SD100, and the Siemens S70 "Avanto".
