North County Transit District (NCTD)

The northern part of San Diego County, in southern California, is served by the North County Transit District -- the NCTD. The NCTD began operating bus service in 1975 and continues to do so today, with buses operating under the "BREEZE" service brand. In addition to standard fixed-route buses, NCTD operates dial-a-ride "FAST" minibus service as well as "LIFT" paratransit.

However, NCTD's service is not just limited to buses. In 1995, the NCTD began operating the "COASTER" commuter rail line connecting Oceanside with San Diego along the former Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad line. This service makes eight stops between Oceanside and San Diego, with stations located in close proximity to the Pacific coast (hence the name.)

In March 2008, the NCTD opened the "SPRINTER" diesel light rail line between Oceanside and Escondido, the second one of its kind in the United States (the RiverLINE in New Jersey was the first.)
