The Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority, or WMATA, provides bus and rail service to the District of Columbia as well as its surrounding precincts in Maryland and Virginia. WMATA operates the world-famous Washington Metrorail subway system, and it also is in charge of running comprehensive bus network to complement Metrorail.
