Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority: Metrorail

Metrorail, or "Metro", is Washington's subway system, operated by the WMATA. Its station architecture, marked by its large concrete barrel-vaulted stations, is world-famous. Currently the second-busiest heavy rail system in the United States (second to New York), Metrorail serves the District of Columbia as well as Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland and Fairfax County, Arlington County, and the city of Alexandria in Virginia. Metrorail currently consists of five operating lines: Metrorail's fleet of rolling stock is currently composed of 1070 individual 75-foot rapid transit cars in permanently-linked couples (married pairs.) There are currently six different types of rolling stock in operation, with the oldest originally manufactured in the early 1970s and the latest in 2005.
