2400-Series 'L' Cars

The CTA took delivery of 200 2400-series 'L' cars from Boeing-Vertol between the years of 1976 and 1978. These cars, designed by the industrial design firm of Sundberg-Ferar, featured modern, smooth stainless steel exteriors with painted fiberglass front ends. The 2400s featured sliding doors rather than the fold-in 'blinker' doors present on previous CTA 'L' car orders.

The 2400s originally were delivered in a red, white and blue paint scheme to commemorate the United States' bicentennial celebrations in 1976, but many of these cars have had their side stripes removed and the front ends painted with gray paint. Several 2400s can be found with a livery of red and white stripes, which indicates that the cars in question are equipped for work service. The 2400-series cars currently can be found on the Green and Purple lines.
