The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (abbreviated to "MBTA" and commonly known as "the T") is the regional transportation operator for a large swath of eastern Massachusetts, including Boston and its suburbs. The MBTA is a diverse operation, consisting of:
- three rapid transit lines (the Red, Blue and Orange lines)
- a subway-surface light rail line with four branches (the Green Line)
- a PCC trolley line (the Ashmont-Mattapan line)
- an extensive commuter rail system
- two bus rapid transit lines (known collectively as the Silver Line)
- several trackless trolley routes in Cambridge
- hundreds of bus lines
- "Commuter Boat" ferry service
