Flxible

Prior to Flxible's demise in the mid-1990s, the state of New Jersey had a long relationship with the Ohio-based bus manufacturer. Throughout the 1970s, NJT's predecessors purchased large numbers of Flxible New Look buses of various lengths and seating configurations. In the 1980s, NJT took delivery of a large number of Grumman Flxible 870 buses that had been previously rejected by the New York City Transit Authority. The 870s were retired in the mid to late 1990s.

In 1983, NJT purchased 165 Metro-A buses from Flxible. These buses were retired in 1996. The agency would later purchase a large order of Flxible Metro-Bs in 1989, and another order of Metro-Ds in 1994. The 1989 and 1994 buses, making up a significant portion of today's NJT fleet, are the only Flxible vehicles currently operating for NJT. The entire fleet is scheduled for retirement upon arrival of the gigantic NABI 416 order taking place between the years of 2008 and 2013, and many Metro-Bs have already been scrapped.

NJT also purchased a small number of LNG-powered Flxible Metro-Cs in 1992. These Cummins L10G-powered buses would be retired in 2004.
