MCI

NJT and its predecessors have a long history of purchasing various over-the-road coaches, the most notable of which were Motor Coach Industries (MCI) products. New Jersey's first MCI order occurred in the 1970s, when NJT's predecessor agencies purchased used MCI MC-8 buses from various sources. In 1982, NJT ordered a large fleet of MC-9 coaches powered by Detroit Diesel 6V92TA engines. Another fleet of MC-9s arrived at NJT and its subcontractors in 1987. All NJT MC-9s have been removed from active service, going to private operators or scrapyards. The last MC-9 was retired in 2007.

In 1987, NJT ordered its only MCI A-series bus with the delivery of one 96A3, numbered 5400 and retired in 2003. In 1998, NJT took delivery of a series of CNG-powered D-series coaches from MCI (the 102-DWA3 CNG fleet) which were refurbished in 2007 and 2008. In the years after 2000, NJT purchased an enormous number of new MCI coaches of various varieties (D4000, D4500, and D4500CL) as well as the D4000H hybrid and D4000N narrow-body coaches both unique to NJT.

NJT leased 20 MCI 102-DL3 coaches in 2006. These buses were removed from the NJT fleet upon the arrival of the latest D4500CL buses.
