MTA New York City Transit (officially known as NYCTA, the New York City Transit Authority) is the primary transit provider for the city of New York. The agency is a subsidiary of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the busiest and largest transit system in North America.
The NYCTA operates the following systems:
- the New York City Subway, a rapid transit system serving every borough of New York City except for Staten Island. With 26 different subway lines stopping at 468 subway stations, and an approximate daily ridership of 5 million, it is one of the most extensive public transportation systems in the world.
- New York City Bus, the primary bus operator in New York City with more than 4,000 buses, 200 bus routes, and 12,000 bus stops. The Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (MaBSTOA), another NYCTA subsidiary, also operates a number of bus routes, but all buses operated by the NYCTA are branded as "MTA New York City Bus."
- the Staten Island Railway, a 14-mile rapid transit line in the borough of Staten Island. No Staten Island photos yet, but some will hopefully come soon.
