Suffolk Transit
Suffolk Transit is an agency that provides bus service to Suffolk County in the eastern half of Long Island. While Suffolk Transit owns the vehicles that operate on its various routes, the buses are leased to and operated by a number of private companies (Suffolk Bus, Inter-County Motor Coach, CBS Lines, Educational Bus Transportation, Sunrise Coach Lines, and Hampton Jitney.)
Suffolk Transit operates two distinct types of routes: main routes and feeder routes. Suffolk's main routes use the "S" designation (example: S40) and connect major towns and other points in Suffolk County. The feeder routes are shorter lines that usually originate from a transit hub and circulate throughout neighborhoods, and these routes are numbered with a number preceding a letter (example: 1A).
Suffolk Transit currently owns a fleet of Gillig Phantom and Orion V buses, distributed amongst each of the private operators. In the past, the various Suffolk companies have operated Flyer D901 and Flxible Metro buses (of which the latter were retired in 2005.)
