Market-Frankford Subway/Elevated

SEPTA's Market-Frankford Subway/Elevated line (also known as the Blue Line) connects 69th Street Terminal, just across Philadelphia's western boundary in the suburb of Upper Darby, to Frankford Terminal in the northeastern part of the city. Along the way, the line operates on an elevated structure over Market Street and a tunnel through Center City, the latter of which is shared with Subway-Surface trolleys. At the eastern end of the tunnel, the line operates in the median of an expressway for a brief distance, after which an elevated structure to Frankford begins.

The MFSE is currently in a state of transition, as the older stations and infrastructure are being dismantled and replaced with modern facilities. To mark the beginning of this rejuvenation effort, new M4 rapid transit cars built by ADtranz went into service in 1997.

During rush hours, the MFSE operates in skip-stop mode. Trains are designated "A" or "B", which only stop at specific "A" or "B" stops, respectively.
