Subway-Surface Routes and Route 15

Phildelphia is one of the few cities in North America still operating a large portion of its original trolley system. Although many lines were converted to bus operation, SEPTA currently runs two distinct on-street trolley operations: the five Subway-Surface routes, and Route 15.

SEPTA's subway-surface routes (10, 11, 13, 34, and 36) all originate at City Hall. From there, they continue west in a tunnel initially shared with trains on the Market-Frankford line. The tunnel later splits in two; route 10 trolleys follow the northern tunnel, while all other routes use the southern tunnel and exit at the 40th Street Portal. After leaving their respective portals, the trolley lines continue as on-street lines to their various terminal loops in the western areas of Philadelphia. All of SEPTA's subway-surface routes use single-ended trolleys built by Kawasaki.

SEPTA's route 15 serves Girard Avenue in northern and western Philadelphia. One of SEPTA's original trolley lines, it was closed in 1992 along with routes 23 and 56, with buses replacing service on all of these lines. Trolley service was restored on Route 15 in 2005, using modernized PCC streetcars known as "PCC-II" vehicles.
